Tagan Turbojet 1100W TG1100-U96

Manufacturer: Tagan
Price as Reviewed (UK): £170.36 + Delivery
Price as Reviewed (US): $299.99

Previously the 700W Tagan Easycon X1 got a recommended award here at bit-tech, which is also a reflection on the constant recommendations the company's PSUs also get from the community on the Internets at large.

Tagan's most powerful PSU to date, the 1100W Turbojet is the heavyweight in our group test and as most other manufacturers seem to think a kilowatt is enough, Tagan obviously felt the need to go ten percent better. Is it needed though? How does it compare to the cable monster that is the Enermax Galaxy and what effect does it have on extra heat output?

As usual, Tagan doesn't fail to disappoint when it comes to boxing its product. Whereas the 700W Easycon X1 came in a set of leather drawers, the 1100W Turbojet comes in its own suitcase. Very stylish, but don't try and take it through customs.

The flat areas are all padded and you even get brass corners and a brass latch to provide a real quality feel rather than having it become some half assed gimmick. Even though it's not a modular PSU, it still provides somewhere to keep and easily transport your computer (or whatever) parts if you like and the inside even has little pouches to store small items in the lid. The PSU and cables even come bubble wrapped for extra protection.

Without a shadow of a doubt it's unique but we're in two minds about it: is it worth the extra cost? Do you need the box or do you do like many other people and just chuck it out or throw it in the loft/garage allowing it to collect dust? It adds value in its multifunction and means you're not just buying a PSU, but does it mean it's more expensive because of it? If you get into that downward spiral though, you can spend all day arguing does something need this-that-and-this; where does it end?

Accessories

  • Power cable with gunmetal braiding and clear plastic covering as well as a ferrite cored EMI shield;
  • Black Velcro cable ties;
  • Four SATA to Molex adapters;
  • Detailed manual with pictures;
  • A couple of cable ties;
  • Case screws;
  • Molex to two floppy plug adapter cable;
The package is pretty good, you get two types of cable management tools, the Velcro ones are obviously reusable and being all black they should blend nicely into the background. There's a Molex to floppy adapter cable which means the actual PSU doesn't require unnecessary cables for those who don't need them any more and you get to put it exactly where it's needed.

The power cable looks to be high quality, with its additional EMI shield and funky looking braiding. Considering the box has zero information about what's inside it, the manual needs to compensate and Tagan doesn't disappoint, offering a detailed manual including installation instructions, specific power rail details and what you should find in the box suitcase.

Again, there are four SATA to Molex adapters included, allowing customisation of the connectors from the PSU. The Tagan doesn't supply many Molex connectors on its cables though so they're actually quite necessary. On the plus side, Tagan's representatives have assured us that if you lose these adapters, just phone or email them and they will send out some more.
