A year from now this card will be worthless, utterly.
I don't know about you, but slotting a 4870 X2 into an Athlon 64 machine doesn't make much sense for someone looking to extend the utility of their old machine. Buying only top-of-the-line is worthless, utterly.
By your logic, why doesn't everyone just drive an Aston Martin? It doesn't fit the needs, budget, nor is it sustainable for everybody.

I agree, but even with casual gaming you'd want a little head room for newer games/longevity reasons.
If my experience with this market is any guide, compared to enthusiasts these users hold on to systems longer and don't open the case themselves to change out components. This means taking it to a technician and paying him/her to do it. Better to do this less often.
And who knows, WoW and The Sims might act like a gateway drug and lead on to more demanding games!
One minute you're rollin' on a little "Hot Date" and throwing cheese down for "Fashion Stuff", and the next you're mainlining CS 1.6 and sucking on a COD4-pipe. Then it's all down hill from there as you sell by-request images of yourself on 4chan to pay for your monthly MMORPG subscriptions.
You know when rock bottom hits when you do it in the darkest boards of Usenet.

And most of your income is in Yen.
And one of your images becomes a notorious internet meme.
