AMD Ultrathin Laptops and Netbooks

There was one area where AMD was conspicuous in its absence over the last year and a half, and that was in netbooks. We asked Grim whether this was a missed opportunity for AMD.

"No, it just wasn’t an area of focus. We don’t really have the financial resource of our competitor, so we didn’t focus on netbooks. What we decided to do was focus really strongly on the notebook, and then decide whether we wanted to get into netbook or ultrathin. With HP and the DV2, we really created that space, and our competitor followed with CULV very quickly.

"This was a pretty easy decision – we took a look at our technology portfolio, and what we viewed as the market opportunity, and it made the most sense to put our resources there. Now that we’ve got the effort in the mainstream notebook and the ultrathin, we’re able to develop some parts that are able to work really well with our 880 chipset that can do well in the netbook space."

CPUs designed for ultrathin or ultraportable laptops that far outperform netbooks will be branded with the Neo name, as you can see from the specifications table.
