.eu is under attack from domain name hoarders who have grabbed 74,000 .eu domain names off the shelves according to EURid who distributes the domains.
The domain name extension which came about for registration for trademark names on the 7th February and to the public on the 7th April, recently .eu reached it's 2 millionth domain registration.
Three firms have been accused on "warehousing" (as it is known in the business) a fair proportion of the domains and all accounts have been suspended due to breaches of contract. 400 registrars are now being sued since it has become obvious that the registrars are intending to sell the domains.
"In this case we are convinced that the domain name holders of the 74 000 .eu names (Ovidio Ltd, Fausto Ltd and Gabino Ltd) are acting as a front for a number of registrars. The domain name holders and the registrars can be regarded as one and the same. Since registrars should only register domain names for existing customers and not "warehouse" the names in order to resell them at a higher price, this is clearly in breach of the registrar contract."
If the court case is successful, the suspended domain names will then become available for sale again which should allow users which have lost out to grab a .eu domain. Have you had problems registering a .eu domain name? Let us know in the forums.
