Microsoft has announced that it is delaying the release of Service Pack 3 for Windows XP until some time in 2008.
SP3 was originally supposed to come out at the end of this year, but was put back until 2007. Now it has been further delayed, with MS citing the need to push Vista to the finish line as the main reason for the delay.
We don't really know what SP3 is set to add, except for a suspicion that it will implement better virus protection features and will possibly add DirectX-10 compatible functions to allow XP to play games at the same graphical level as Windows Vista, which ships with DX10 included.
The delay means that the gap between SP2 and SP3 will have been more than four years.
There are some cynics in the community who are suggesting that this is a ploy to get users upgrading to Vista. However, I would say that those who are going to go to Vista - or not - will not be affected either way by a new Windows XP service pack. The difference in functionality is not comparable.
Let us know if you'll be going to Vista, or if you'll stick around for SP3,
