There are certain combinations in the geek world that are legendary in their awesome potential, but we rarely get to see these actualised in any form.
Alien vs. Predator and
Robocop vs. The Terminator are the first examples to pop into our minds of examples that got realised, but one combo we never expected to see was Warren Spector vs. John Woo.
The two media veterans are now going to be teaming up though to bring a new movie and game franchise to the market. And not only that, but a franchise about
Ninjas!
Titled
Ninja Gold,
Pro-G informs us that the franchise will see 'traditional' ninjas fighting in a modern era, drawing on rumours that the Yakuza and Russian mobs are working to steal 'tons of gold' from South Africa.
John Woo, director of classics like
Face/Off, The Killer and
Hard Boiled, will be directing and producing the movie side of things, while Warren Spector, creator and designer of classics like
Deus Ex,
Thief: The Dark Project and
System Shock, will be producing the game and acting as exec producer of the film.
"The idea actually started with John Woo. He wanted to do something involving traditional ninjas in a modern-day setting, and the idea just resonated with me. I was intrigued with the idea of what happens when the traditional and the contemporary come into conflict," said Spector.
The film will have a more of realistic focus than the game, which we're hoping will involve the elastic storylines and multiple routes for which Spector has become known, and is scheduled to start production next year. Details are obviously very thin on the ground right now, but we're still very excited about the concept.
In the mean time, we'll be able to sink our teeth into Woo's other game project later this year with the release of
Stranglehold on PS3, 360 and PC.
Stranglehold will be an extension of Woo's
Hard Boiled film and will use the likeness of Chow Yun Fat for the player character.
While
Ninja gold is still a way off, it's never too early for speculation and so we put it to you; Will the game or the film bet better. Or, put simply; Spector vs. Woo - make your bets in the
forums.
