During meetings with a number of Nvidia’s partners, we learned that the Santa Clara-based graphics card maker is about to lower the price on its flagship GeForce 8800 Ultra.
Currently the GeForce 8800 Ultra is priced around the 700 Euro (£475) mark with taxes added on, but that is set to drop by around 50 Euros (£35) in the next few weeks.
This should see cards like EVGA’s e-GeForce 8800 Ultra Superclocked come down to around £500, while standard clocked Ultras will cost as little as £440 – that’s about what the GeForce 8800 GTX cost at launch.
Speaking of the GTX, if that stays at the same price as it is now, the difference in price between cards like EVGA’s 8800 GTX KO Superclocked and the standard 8800 Ultras will be as little as £25. That’s far more in line with where it should be, in our opinion.
If and when this price change goes through, there is also likely to be more pressure on AMD, because Nvidia has no competition at the high-end. With Nvidia lowering prices, the more expensive alternatives to the ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT start to look a lot more attractive, especially for those with 24” and 30” widescreen monitors.
