LucasArts has been a bit controversial over the last few years, with many gamers considering that they are solely responsible for allowing the adventure game genre to die after the utterly fantastic Grim Fandango and focusing far too much on creating quick and nasty Star Wars games.

Still, the new Star Wars game looks like a nice change of pace from Star Wars: Yoda Stories.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed will be hitting all consoles and handhelds, including the PlayStation 2 this time next year and tells the story of Darth Vader's secret apprentice, who must search out and kill all the remaining Jedi. No PC or Wii version is yet announced, but if it doesn't see a PC port at some point then we'll...well, we'll cry. Lots.

Reassuringly, some retailers still recently listed the game as being playable on XP.

Set between Revenge of The Sith and A New Hope the game will star characters both new and old and is being written by Chris Armstrong. Players will get a chance to use a range of weapons and lightsabers, including new force powers of devastating potential - as proved by the opening sequence in the trailer where the player character uses Force Pull to crash a Star Destroyer into a planet.

As you do.

The game will also function as a showcase for Pixelux's Digital Molecular Matter engine which has been developed by a number of designers especially for the game and which allows complex telekinesis force powers to interact with an incredibly detailed environment. The game itself will run on the Euphoria Engine.

In usual LucasArts style though, the game won't be a stand-alone product. Instead, it will get a tie-in novel, comic book, toy line, reference book and pen and paper RPG game.

All we need now is a Wii lightsaber game and a Star Wars PC!
