Yesterday morning, Intel CEO Paul Otellini announced that Intel’s next generation platform is codenamed Montevina and is expected to launch in the middle of 2008.
During this morning’s mobility keynote Dadi Perlmutter, Intel senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s mobility group, released some details on the new platform.
He said that Montevina will span the full range of notebook design from mini-notes to full-sized desktop replacements. At the heart of the Montevina platform, there will be a 45nm Penryn processor and interestingly, Intel is planning to lower the standard voltage chips from a 35W TDP to 25W.
Montevina won’t be the first platform to support Penryn, as there is a Santa Rosa refresh due when the new mobile processors launch at the start of next year.
The platform will include integrated support for Blu-ray and HD DVD along with next-generation data manageability and security features for businesses. Montevina will also integrate both WiFi and WiMAX which, according to Intel will not result in increased power consumption.
While WiMAX is something that the US market desperately needs, we Brits already have high-speed Internet connectivity on the move thanks to the wonder that is HSDPA.
Intel will reduce the package sizes on its chips with Montevina, allowing motherboard dimensions to be reduced to around 60 percent of the size of a similar Santa Rosa-based motherboard. The new packaging will also allow notebooks to be around 25 percent thinner too.
During Otellini’s keynote there was a Montevina “notebook” up and running, but it wasn’t exactly elegant – it was sitting in a dummy case. However, this morning Dadi Perlmutter showed off the first notebook based on the new platform. Both machines were running Windows and running it well.
