Valve has said that there'll be no Portal 2 released in 2008 unfortunately.

In a recent interview, Doug Lombardi has revealed that there are currently no plans to release a sequel to The Orange Box's Portal in 2008.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Lombardi said that the Seattle-based developer wanted to do something new with the idea instead of just churning out more of the same right away.

"In typical Valve tradition, it won't be Portal with different colours," said Lombardi.

"I think that when you hit something like that, you have two choices: you can quickly replicate it and stick it out there - do the opportunistic thing and cash in on it - or you can do the crazy thing like we did after Half-Life was so successful and go off and try and say, 'Okay, that was revolutionary, so its successor has to be equally as revolutionary.'"

Lombardi then went on to point out that he knows people want more of the original game, but that Valve feels it would be boring to just remake the original straight away.

Lombardi described Portal as something of an experiment - one which definitely payed off judging by the critical acclaim that the game received. Lombardi did admit that the process of taking so long to make the right game could be painful though, pointing to Half-Life 2 as a perfect example. The sequel to the original Half-Life took six years and more than 40 million dollars to develop.

Do you think that Valve has got the right idea, or would you just prefer more of the same straight away? Let us know in the forums.

Episodic content anyone?

Hmmm... I definitely see where they are coming from, and would agree with any other game... Portal though lends itself so easily to downloadable content though that I think valve area almost shooting themselves in the foot. There would be nothing wrong with making another 20 levels or so for us to play with. Perhaps use some of the cool mechanics that people have come up with in mods.

Portal isn't just a toy, it has a storyline and ties in with the HL story. They can't just release levels that would tie into the game. Modders are already making new levels so that's not an issue.

I look forward to another Portal game that explains how, why, where, etc.

I agree completely with Valve and bowman here - Portal had a story, so chucking out 20 levels wouldn't really work.

There are plenty of 3rd party maps coming now, so I'd rather see a revolution rather than a respin.

episodic content for a game that was originally only 3 hours long? I think not. Certainly gonna piss off crowds who have to wait months for an hours worth of gameplay.

More of the same would suck, infact I dont think i've really played the portal levels/challenges more than 20 times each - as it is the puzzles can only be so complex - they need to add something completely new!

i only say to them: "surprise the hell out of me again!"
Quote hawky84 28th April 2008, 13:38
Let them continue!!! Make another epic!!!

Plus there are plenty of people making new levels for portal all the time, at places like http://www.myaperturelabs.com/

Completely right what he said.

what does this mean for HL2:E3?
Quote Flibblebot 28th April 2008, 14:44
It means that Portal 2 won't be bundled with HL2:E3...:p

Not quite sure what else you're getting at?

It'll be late? but then i think that statement could be made with or with out portal 2.... See valve time for more info. :D

I get the feeling we won't see the main character of Portal in HL:2E3. I think Gordan will stumble upon the portal gun without knowing where it came from. Then down the road we will get Portal 2 and it will show what happened.

Personally I love that Valve doesn't just churn out sequels. Every game gets a tremendous amount of thought and polish. Of coarse that means we get to wait for the next great game, but it makes it well worth it. It is sad that the episodic content didn't go to plan (one every 6 months), but I would rather them keep working on it till it is right, then release a half assed game.

I am eagerly awaiting Ep3. It is going to rock.

So far Valve is a company that I find well worth the wait when it comes to there games, as they have yet to disappoint me, so Im sure this will be worth the wait just as much as Episode 3 which Im dying to play.

does it mean they will delay HL2:E3 until Portal2 is done, like they did with HL2:E2

I'll be bored waiting.... uhhhh...

Is ep3 even due out this year? I haven't heard any news about it yet... I wouldn't be suprised at all if they released that and portal together at the end of 09.

No, I think it means that HL2:E3 will be released without Portal2 but another (as yet unnamed) title instead.
Quote scq 29th April 2008, 11:25
Also, in typical Valve tradition, do not expect it to be released until 2011.
