The new Prince of Persia game will have a wholly different art style to the old trilogy.

Joypad magazine, a French gaming mag, has just published the first preview of the new Prince of Persia game from Ubisoft, which was only just announced.

According to Joypad (via and translated by Eurogamer) the game is being developed for PS3, PC and Xbox 360 by the original development team behind The Sands of Time - unarguably the best game in the most recent trilogy.

Still, just because the same dev team is back on board doesn't mean that it'll be the same game - there are some huge changes planned for the new title, including a new highly-detailed form of the cel-shading art style.

The prince specifically has a very new look too, appearing much younger and mystical thanks to a blanket of desert scarves. Don't expect to see any time-altering powers either, as these have been removed from the story.

Levels have changed too and the gameplay style is apparently much more Zelda-like than previous games, using large, organic levels with very contrasting themes. The game appears to draw inspiration heavily from titles like Shadow of the Colossus and Okami, with a storyline that draws on Zoroastrian myth and sees the Prince trying to repair the world from an ungodly corruption he accidentally releases. In his battle to heal the world the Prince ascends from lowly robber to the rightful Prince of Persia.

Combat is said to have been scaled down and made more in-depth too, with a focus on one-on-one duels and a play-style which is more Soul Calibur than God of War, apparently.

"The previous trilogy mixed the Arabian Nights in with historical Persia," said Creative Director Jean-Christophe Guyot. "We decided we'd prefer to return to the tales of the Thousand and One Nights for something more colourful."

Excited? Us too. Unleash your anticipation in the forums.

I love Okami styled games. If they can do it well and have the persian theme it would be fantastic. Really glad to see they're trying something completely new for them as well.

Nintendo's Zelda - A random young boy suddenly caught in the middle of crossfire, which then discovers that he adheres to some age old prophecy.

Ubisoft's(now anyway) Prince - A Persian Prince who accidentally unleashed hell and tries to undo his mistakes.

you may be right, but even if so, i saw a preview article in gameinformer that compared the concept art to screenshots and they are strikingly similar. the cell shaded animation is surprising successful in action! the evolution of art is pretty amazing, ay?
