Doom - it's pretty much the cultural grandfather of PC gaming and though games like
Wolfenstein 3D technically beat it to the finish line,
Doom has long been regarded as the first truly modern FPS, responsible for bringing multiplayer to the masses.
Now, despite the mixed legacy of
Doom 3, id Software has announced it is working on a fourth game in the series.
According to a press release fresh from the mailbox of id Software CEO and co-founder Todd Hollenshead, production of
Doom 4 officially started today and the company is looking for fresh talent to help create the game.
"
Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth," said Hollenshead in the release.
No other details have been given, but for the story we're betting it's going to be something along the lines of certain
Doomed space marine going toe-to-toe with all manner of hellspawn in areas predominantly constructed from shadows.
While the common assumption seems to be that the game will run on the id Tech 5 engine, we have to say we wouldn't be surprised if Carmack and co. pull something entirely new out of the box instead. The
Doom franchise certainly deserves something a little bit special and if anyone can knock our socks off then it'd be id.
Excited about
Doom 4? Maybe you're looking to
apply for a job with id and want to work as a level designer on the game? Either way, let us know in
the forums.
