The Watchmen game will be released episodically and will cast players as Nite Owl II or Rorschach.

Warner Bros. has announced that it will be creating a game tie-in for the upcoming film adaptation of Alan Moore's celebrated graphic novel, The Watchmen.

The game, which was announced by Warner Bros. late last night, will be developed by Deadline Games and will be an action-brawler affair starring main characters the Nite Owl II and Rorschach.

The game will be released episodically too, which Warner Bros. hopes will allow the developer time to create a more interesting game experience. The first installment of the game is scheduled to release with the film, with a second episode following with the DVD release. More will follow after that based on the success of the earlier titles.

"Rather than the more traditional "time is limited squeeze the puppy onto the market" route, we wanted to craft something that's the best possible game it can be," said Warner Bros. Samantha Ryan to Kotaku.

The comic tells the story of an alternate future where costumed heroes are an unfortunate reality made redundant by the omniscient powers of superman Dr. Manhattan, whose presence is the only thing holding the world back from mutually assured destruction. The comic is often referred to as the first true graphic novel and is something we heartily suggest reading.

The movie is currently in production and is set for a 2009 release, being directed by Zack Snyder of 300 fame. You can check out the trailer here, or pass on your comments in the forums.

let's hope it's not a half-arsed rush job (a la every other film/game tie-in so far...)

My initiall reaction was WAAAAAYYYYYYY!!!! Then I tried to remember the last decent film tie in and other than Aliens vs Predator (which was out way before the films) the only ones I could think of dated back to the days of the Spectrum - specifically Aliens and Ghostbusters and at a push Cobra so I kind of felt deflated after that but hopefully this will the game that comes good.

The screen shots I've seen of the new Ghostbusters game look great and the new Colonial Marines game looks simply fantastic so hopefully the Watchmen games will follow suit.

An action brawler huh? I don't recall the comic actually having all that many actiony scenes. I'm very unexcited, curious about the movie though.
