NPD reveals best-selling console games of 2008

Grand Theft Auto IV is the best selling game of 2008 on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The NPD figures are in and the top five best selling console games of 2008 (so far) have been revealed thanks to a new feature at Gamasutra which has based the announcement on figures from the games sales tracking group, NPD.

The results are an interesting mix of predictable, with Grand Theft Auto IV making an obvious appearance on the PS3 and Xbox 360 list, and surprising.

One thing which does seem interesting though is the growing trend in Wii game sales for games which have a controller attachment to sell very well - as evidenced by four of the top five game in the Wii category. Check out the lists below.

From that list I've got :
GTA IV (brother bought it last week, but it's not one I'll be playing as I'm not fussed on the GTA games),
Madden '09 (borrowed from a mate in work while he's in China)
Mario Kart and Wii Play

Out of all 10 of those games (admittedly a fair bit of crossover of course) for 360 & PS3 there is *one* (Army of Two) which is not a sequel.... sad days?

Isnt NPD USA only ?

Last week there was a story about 6 Million Xbox 360's sold in Europe, and god knows how many wii's / PS3's. The owners of these must rack up some substantial software sales too.

NPD looks at console and software sales with one eye shut, and the other eye half covered with a patch.

I just recently got a 360 so I only have GTA4 off of that list. I can't bring myself to buy COD4 on a console and the PC version is still too expensive.

i think the ratio a few months ago was 5.5 games per xbox sold
