The Xbox 360 may be out-selling the PS3 two to one, but the Wii is still the king of the home consoles.
Well, it seems like there's nothing like a good ol' price cut to help shift units for Microsoft. The software and console giant has just announced that sales of the Xbox 360 have increased by 214 percent following the Xbox 360 price cuts and that the Xbox 360 is now selling two consoles for every one PlayStation 3.
The sales, which are supported by sales figures from Chart-Track, include only those from the past two weeks.
"O
ur commitment to continuously improving and innovating new content, our new high-profile marketing campaign and the fact that we're now the best-value next-gen console on the market with an entry-level ERP of GBP 129.99 combine to make Xbox 360 the right blend of gaming and wider experiences at the right price to offer unparalleled entertainment for everyone. And these figures prove it," said a rather smarmy Chris Lewis, Xbox 360 Euro boss.
Microsoft could still stand to learn a thing or two from Nintendo it seems though, as even though the Xbox 360 Arcade is now the cheapest console on the market, the Wii is still firmly ahead. In fact, there are almost three times as many Nintendo Wii's in the market as there are PlayStation 3s.
The past year has been a time of huge growth for all consoles however, according to
GI.biz, and the size of the installed user base for consoles has doubled in the UK over the past twelve months.
As of September 2008, the PlayStation 3 has sold 1.4 million units in the UK and the Xbox 360 has sold 2.3 million, while the Nintendo Wii has sold a jaw-dropping 3.6 million units. Over the past year both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have sold a million units, roughly.
In the handheld markets though the PSP appears to be a bit of a dead duck. While the DS has shot from 3.8 million sold units in the UK to a stunning 7.1 million units, the PSP has only grown from 2.2 million to 2.9 million.

I dont get why MS makes such a big deal out of outselling PS3 for a few weeks when the PS3 has been outselling it all year long (besides a few weeks when 360 had price cuts).
Now if they could sustain this and continue to outsell the PS3 then it's worth mentioning. Otherwise its 'meh'.
Anyways, according to VGChartz it didn't double PS3 sales. PS3 sold 52K and 360 sold 70K. Heres a link: http://www.vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=Wii®1=Europe&cons2=PS3®2=Europe&cons3=X360®3=Europe&start=39712&end=39719
And as you can tell by the graph, PS3 sales didnt drop any from the previous week. (actually it dropped about 700, but w/e)
Heres a graph going back exactly 1 year. It outsold the ps3 this same time last year and since then the PS3 has been outselling it

None of them have a ps3 or x360
sales dont mean that much anyway, the ps3 is sold at a huge loss while the 360 became profitable months ago.
its just ms pointing out that its unusual that they have sold more at a stage where their sales are at a low because of the stage the 360 is at
Im fortunate to own a Wii and a proper next gen console. The only time the wii is turned on is when the wife uses Wii Fit, or has her friends round to play Wii Sports or Mario Party. Thats is. Period. Its like one of those single use consoles you bought in the 80s LOL!
I see your point, but vgchartz is hardly a reliable source of information. They're lastest data points are just guesswork which they later append. But you could say that with the general trend that it's still going to be several years before the PS3 overtakes the 360 in total sales, if it ever does.
lewchenko,
I too have a wii and a "proper next gen" console. What a waste of money the Wii was. I bought it at launch and only have Wii Sports, Wil Play, Zelda, Warioware and Mario (all 1st party). I have never owned so few games for a console I have had this long. Doesn't look like their is anything on the horizon either.
a higher price doesnt mean higher profit. and the ps3 costing 3x as much is exagerated
if thats in response to me saying the ps3 sells at a loss heres a link
www.bit-tech.net/news/2008/05/15/sony-losing-260-on-each-ps3-sold/1
search anywhere on the net the 360 is now making a profit and the ps3 causes big losses per console
the main profit is from games and accesories, this is probably a better marker to compare. if you check the uk charts every week (which i do theyre acutally on page 809 on c4 interactive on fridays (i dont know who compiles the chart)) the multiformat games always sell more on 360 than the ps3 version
Errm 3 times? It's not even twice as much...
You can't compare the basic bog-standard xbox 360 anyway, yet it's still not 3 times the amount. You can get yourself an 80GB PS3 along with a game for £300, you can get an xbox 360 premium 60GB with a game for £170. I agree the PS3 should be cheaper, but don't make stuff up about it.
and yeh it has HDMI. altough if you want to use HMDI with an optic surround sound you have to hack the original connector appart
Don't forget SEGA's Mad World (I think its Mad World... don't remember exactly).
I don't, it's incredibly good value for everything you get (although less so now than when it was launched), main issue is whether you need everything you get. Now BR is the firm winner of the format war, there's no uncertainty whether it will last.
TBH I think MS should have just canned the arcade when they introduced the 60Gb model instead of getting rid of the 20Gb. I don't see a good reason to have kept it, if you want any arcade games or DLC you need a hard drive, 20Gb is more than enough for a casual user who only downloads a few games.
but its bloody pointless tbh. youll probably need a hdd at some stage, your really gonna buy one eventually if you get into it at all
why would you buy a new one.
The store I orignally bought my system from didn't cover RRODs which was crap.
im not one to talk anyway i have two. one that over heats and gives two red lights after 3/4 hours play sometimes and the arcade i bought to replace it
i bloody hope the one i have now lasts. im on my forth now and im not that huge of a gamer. id say i mite have put in 25 hours last week but thats the most id ever play
I only know one person who has their original 360. He researched 360s and found a certain lot/team # for a premium system.
Erm, I saw a brand new 360 the other day on offer for just over £100.
That's over 3 hours a day on average... by the time I get back from work/pub and eat I barely have 3 hours to spend in total, let alone just playing games!
I'm waiting for the rumoured slim version of the PS3 next year before I get one... I'm in no hurry!
I wouldn't even consider the arcade 360 no matter what price it was.
So far:
Wii is winning on hype and price (together)
360 is 2nd because of being 1st to market, having the most 3rd party support, giving the consumer the choice on what they want/need (though add-ons cost more) and on initial cost for HD gaming
PS3 is last because of being 1-year behind 360 (direct competitor), less 3rd party support (less taking advantage of HW), giving the consumer (probably) more than they want/need and on having the highest initial cost for HD gaming
I own a 360 and a Wii. Had my Wii since March I believe.
My Wii is sitting in its box and I'm trying to sell it because I don't play it at all.
Whenever I go to play a video game, I just turn to my 360 because it's far more fun to me.
I'll stop calling it a fad when I actually want to play mine again.
The Wii will still easily be the number one games console this Xmas and probably the number one toy too.
For me, there is no reason to play the Wii right now and probably never will be. I haven't played the Wii since Mario Kart came out, and it got old to both me and my g/f very quick. Since then, nothing. There is no reason to turn it on. The polls are great and all when you already have the console turned on, but I would never turn the Wii on just to answer a bunch on polls just to turn it off. If that's the case, why own one?
I agree that the Wii will "still easily be the number one games console this Xmas and probably the number one toy too.", but again, how does this prove that the Wii is not a fad?
If you are talking about Europe (which is what the main post is about) PS3 actually has more overall sales in Europe that PS3.
Heres a chart for that. http://www.vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=Wii®1=Europe&cons2=PS3®2=Europe&cons3=X360®3=Europe&start=38963&end=39719&weekly=1
Hardly reliable heh? Which is why when the game companies release their 'official' number they are in-line with vgchartz' number right?
Acutally the most common prediction is for PS3 to overtake the 360 in worldwide sales by end of 2009. With how much cheaper the 360 is than the PS3 and the fact the PS3 still outsells it shows that the next price cut will give the PS3 huge gains.
Surely that's a pretty easy question to answer? A quick glance at the UK games chart last week shows 8 titles that are available for the Wii, 3 of them exclusively. Obviously games are being released for it and people are buying them.
More good itles that are coming out soon include Wario, Day of Disaster and Animal Crossing so I don't really get yor point?
Saying that's the same as saying the PS3 would outsell the 360 10:1 if it was the same price as the 360.
It will....
PS3 $399.99
360 $259.99 +Wifi adaptor $82.99 +rechargable battery kit $17.99 +XBL $50 +$150 120GB HDD(they don't make a 80gb)
That's now not release months.
