Fancy one of these for £260?

Fancy one of these for £260?

If you are after a Core i7 CPU they are now finally available in the shops and when you consider that it's a high demand product plus the fact we're in rip off Britain, the prices are a bit higher than we expected.

We've done a whip round to get a general idea of prices from major UK online etailers:

Scan:
920: £259.87
940: £516.02
965: £880.27

Ebuyer:
920: £264.37
940: £495.84
965: £872.14

Microdirect:
920: £252.63
940: £488.28
965: £865.32

Overclockers:
920: £281.99
940: £516.99
965: £904.74

Aria:
920: £246.69
940: £480.58
965: £857.69

Generally that makes the 920 available for about £260 on average, a short stroke away from the $284 per 1,000 in the States. The 940s vary quite considerably in price and averages at about £500 and the 965 Extreme Editions can be had for a crazy £876, although if you're that desperate to lighten the weight of your wallet I'll happily volunteer spending it for you.

In terms of expensive motherboards to drop your expensive new CPU into - the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 can be purchased for "just" £226.72, and it's in stock, and the cheapest MSI is just a nose more expensive at £233.77. The cheapest Asus we could find in our short search was £249.96 for the P6T Deluxe and Overclockers is the only place in the UK to currently list Foxconn's Renaissance and EVGA's X58 for pre-order at £293.74 and £305.49 respectively.

It doesn't stop there though and Asus is determined to set new records of insanely expensive pricing with its Rampage II Extreme, also available for pre-order at £340.74. We can only assume it comes with money off vouchers for a Ferrari and probably a Premiership football club as well.

How do you think these prices measure up for Intel's latest and greatest? Are you temped or have you already bought into it? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.

I see these bad boys making a killing the professional field.

Gamers, though, are likely to stick with their Core 2's for a very long while yet.
Quote bowman 17th November 2008, 16:37
Except for those of us who don't even have a Core 2 to begin with.

My 920 and P6T are on their way..

I hear you bowman, I'm still running an Athlon XP 2500+ 8(
Quote Tyrmot 17th November 2008, 16:46
These first 2 posts seem to sum it up perfectly, if you've got Core 2 at the moment this is definitely (unsurprisingly) not worth it at the mo... I look forward to prices dropping to more reasonable levels soon
Quote Paradigm Shifter 17th November 2008, 16:47
Ouch. I think I'll wait to see what price the 45nm Deneb-core Phenoms (or Phenom II's, if the web rumour mill is correct...) will be. The motherboards are cheaper (790FX+SB750 DFI board for £120!) and use DDR2...

But I must admit that I7 is tempting.
Quote bowman 17th November 2008, 17:01
Phenom II is actually official, not rumor mill - AMD confirmed this on that there Financial Analyst Day they had.

Anyway, I doubt Deneb will make me regret this purchase.. The recession-driven price drops early next year probably will, though.
Quote mclean007 17th November 2008, 17:51
About what I expected, given the USD:GBP exchange rate is now about 1.5, the fact that those are inc VAT prices, and the fact that you are quoting UK retail against US volume prices.

Take the cheapest price for the 920 (Aria), which is £246.69 inc VAT. That is £209.95 ex VAT, which is $315.58 at xe.com's current rate of 1.50312. That compares pretty favourably with Newegg.com's retail price of $319.99.

The pricing isn't that bad for a new generation of chips at launch - let's bear in mind that these are 45nm quad core chips and they are faster than anything else out there and, by all accounts, supremely overclockable :D
Quote chrisb2e9 17th November 2008, 18:05
this time next year I might start to look at replacing my q6600 and asus p5k. not enough of an increase to buy a new board, new ram, new cpu etc.
Quote DarkFear 17th November 2008, 18:10
Oh how I loathe the feebleness of our currency... ZAR4600 for an i7 920, ZAR4900 for the Asus P6T and an equally insane amount for some decent DDR3. Yeah, I don't think I'll be upgrading just yet.
Quote frontline 17th November 2008, 18:24
Out of my price range, here's hoping the current socket 775 dual/quad cores nosedive in price for a bargain instead :) (especially when Phenom II arrives).

They're selling the 920 for the cheapest and that's what most people would probably wanna buy. They're not usually that bad.

I just had a look at Scan and their prices are different to the ones you quote.
920 is on offer today only at £268.10,normally £270.16

965 £890.85 £892.02

Not everyone wanted to click the link, especially since in the published figures above; they're the most expensive.

But you are correct: £234.99 for the 920. I'd rather pay more and not have the possibility of dealing with their customer services, however. :)

The £234.99 price on there is ex VAT
Inc. VAT they are still the most expensive from by the list.

Holy Rip Off Batman.... that is if you are shopping at overclockers.co.uk (which I often do)

Just checked their site and its £276 inc our glorious VAT for the 920.

Aria at £246 is substantially cheaper.

In any event, I never buy a product that's new on the market. Take the 8800GT, perfect example: EVERY source gave it rave reviews and advised buying at least one immediately, because it actually ran Crysis (sort of) and wasn't stupidly expensive. Then a few months later a whole host of moderately priced, Crysis-capable cards came out that were better value for money. I'm now sitting happily on an HD4870.

It always, always pays to wait a little bit. I would urge anyone considering buying on the bleeding edge to wait a month or two - even if it doesn't change your mind (and if you're a genuinely huge spender, it probably won't) it'll at least lower the cost by 5-10%.

That's no criticism of your purchase, bowman - I'm sure it will be an awesome chip :)
Quote FeRaL 17th November 2008, 21:10
Prices are way high, for a low end cpu and mobo it's gong to cost you around $600 USD... For $100 more you can get a q6600 a decent mobo 4GB of Ram and a nice ATI card and be done with it... Also, rumor has it socket 775 is getting extended to 2011, so there will probably be some great 775 cpu's to come.

To add insult to injury, AMD is coming out with their Phenom II procs and the AM3 ones will support ddr2 and ddr3. These are suppoded to come out in feb09. I will probably wait on the fence until then and make a purchase when the cards are on the table.

In the news header to this article you say "not as expensive as we expected" then at the end of the first paragraph of the actual article you say "the prices are a bit higher than we expected" I'm confused! ;-)

I'm with FeRal, I'll be going straight to i7 at the end of the month - am coming from a Sempron 2400+ so am definitely in need of an upgrade! Recently been given £1000 to that's a nice starting point!
Quote kenco_uk 17th November 2008, 21:18
Aye, i7 920 is a good price for what you get, the memory is okay seeing as it's not had a chance to mature as yet, but the motherboard price.. ouch - a lot.

Anyways, this just makes the decision easier to stick to my trusty C2D E6600 @ 3.6 GHz (on air). Maybe next year around August/September after I moved to Austria...Westmere most likely.

Custom PC this month (just got my subscriber edition today which I think is the Jan09 edition) have a great set of pages outlining the i7 series, and also review the benefits of dual channel ddr3 vs triple channel ddr3. Well worth a read.

Interestingly they also review 3 motherboards. Two are £270 and one is £350. Jesus H Christ. Motherboard manufacturer's are really taking the p*ss in this economic climate. I remember paying about £85 for my superb Abit ip35 pro for my current Core 2 e6750.

Combine a £270 MB with a £260 processor, and then theres the memory.. atleast £150 to £200 for a full set of DDR3..... Wow... just Wow. and thats even before Ive started to look at the GPU/HD/Case/ DVD drive etc etc.

Sorry... but Im sitting this out. Waaaaaay too expensive for me at this stage.

I did that already :D

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2008/11/03/intel-core-i7-920-945-965-review/1

but it's good the CPC guys did it too :) I've got the new edition and have still not read it - I've been waiting for the final BIOS' and SLI drivers before I start X58 reviews. Should be at the start of December now - Ive got DDR3 for this week then two P45s (Gigabyte UD3R and DFI JR!) to finish first. I figured after about 25 Core i7 articles people might be getting a bit peeved off.

P6T Deluxe
3GB Corsair 1333 Dominators

or

9650

8GB OCZ 800 C4

both roughly the same price, would be interesting to see which one wins at max 24/7 oc...

Well i bought from there before never got through to them on phone or anything, tried ebuyer and they were similar (when they did phone support "properly") and now trade with Tekheads as I can pick the items up (live in lincoln) and they have great service.

Dabs aint too bad either but only used for 2 laptops.
