Fancy one of these for £260?
If you are after a Core i7 CPU they are now finally available in the shops and when you consider that it's a high demand product plus the fact we're in rip off Britain, the prices are a bit higher than we expected.
We've done a whip round to get a general idea of prices from major UK online etailers:

Generally that makes the 920 available for about £260 on average, a short stroke away from the $284 per 1,000 in the States. The 940s vary quite considerably in price and averages at about £500 and the 965 Extreme Editions can be had for a crazy £876, although if you're that desperate to lighten the weight of your wallet I'll happily volunteer spending it for you.
In terms of expensive motherboards to drop your expensive new CPU into - the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 can be purchased for "just"
£226.72, and it's in stock, and the cheapest MSI is just a nose more expensive at
£233.77. The cheapest Asus we could find in our short search was
£249.96 for the P6T Deluxe and Overclockers is the only place in the UK to currently list Foxconn's Renaissance and EVGA's X58 for pre-order at
£293.74 and
£305.49 respectively.
It doesn't stop there though and Asus is determined to set new records of insanely expensive pricing with its Rampage II Extreme, also available for pre-order at
£340.74. We can only assume it comes with money off vouchers for a Ferrari and probably a Premiership football club as well.
How do you think these prices measure up for Intel's latest and greatest? Are you temped or have you already bought into it? Let us know your thoughts
in the forums.
Gamers, though, are likely to stick with their Core 2's for a very long while yet.
My 920 and P6T are on their way..
But I must admit that I7 is tempting.
Anyway, I doubt Deneb will make me regret this purchase.. The recession-driven price drops early next year probably will, though.
Take the cheapest price for the 920 (Aria), which is £246.69 inc VAT. That is £209.95 ex VAT, which is $315.58 at xe.com's current rate of 1.50312. That compares pretty favourably with Newegg.com's retail price of $319.99.
The pricing isn't that bad for a new generation of chips at launch - let's bear in mind that these are 45nm quad core chips and they are faster than anything else out there and, by all accounts, supremely overclockable :D
How do they stay in business.
They're selling the 920 for the cheapest and that's what most people would probably wanna buy. They're not usually that bad.
920 is on offer today only at £268.10,normally £270.16
940 £514.85 £516.02
965 £890.85 £892.02
Not much of a discount, but better than a kick in the *****.Shop around if you MUST have one,but for me i wont be throwing out my C2D E8200 just yet
920 - $319.99
940 - $599.99
965 -$1069.99
Intel Core i7 940 2.93GHz Nehalem 8MB Cache LGA1366 - Retail £518.95
Intel Core i7 965 3.2GHz Nehalem Extreme Edition 8MB Cache LGA1366 - Retail £898.88

But you are correct: £234.99 for the 920. I'd rather pay more and not have the possibility of dealing with their customer services, however. :)
The £234.99 price on there is ex VAT
Inc. VAT they are still the most expensive from by the list.

Just checked their site and its £276 inc our glorious VAT for the 920.
Aria at £246 is substantially cheaper.
It always, always pays to wait a little bit. I would urge anyone considering buying on the bleeding edge to wait a month or two - even if it doesn't change your mind (and if you're a genuinely huge spender, it probably won't) it'll at least lower the cost by 5-10%.
That's no criticism of your purchase, bowman - I'm sure it will be an awesome chip :)
To add insult to injury, AMD is coming out with their Phenom II procs and the AM3 ones will support ddr2 and ddr3. These are suppoded to come out in feb09. I will probably wait on the fence until then and make a purchase when the cards are on the table.
I'm with FeRal, I'll be going straight to i7 at the end of the month - am coming from a Sempron 2400+ so am definitely in need of an upgrade! Recently been given £1000 to that's a nice starting point!

DECIDE!!!! :p
Anyways, this just makes the decision easier to stick to my trusty C2D E6600 @ 3.6 GHz (on air). Maybe next year around August/September after I moved to Austria...Westmere most likely.
Interestingly they also review 3 motherboards. Two are £270 and one is £350. Jesus H Christ. Motherboard manufacturer's are really taking the p*ss in this economic climate. I remember paying about £85 for my superb Abit ip35 pro for my current Core 2 e6750.
Combine a £270 MB with a £260 processor, and then theres the memory.. atleast £150 to £200 for a full set of DDR3..... Wow... just Wow. and thats even before Ive started to look at the GPU/HD/Case/ DVD drive etc etc.
Sorry... but Im sitting this out. Waaaaaay too expensive for me at this stage.
LOL! True, I went from "wow that's quite reasonable" to "hmm still expensive" in the space of writing the two :o
I did that already :D
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2008/11/03/intel-core-i7-920-945-965-review/1
but it's good the CPC guys did it too :) I've got the new edition and have still not read it - I've been waiting for the final BIOS' and SLI drivers before I start X58 reviews. Should be at the start of December now - Ive got DDR3 for this week then two P45s (Gigabyte UD3R and DFI JR!) to finish first. I figured after about 25 Core i7 articles people might be getting a bit peeved off.
P6T Deluxe
3GB Corsair 1333 Dominators
or
9650
P5Q Deluxe
8GB OCZ 800 C4
both roughly the same price, would be interesting to see which one wins at max 24/7 oc...
Dabs aint too bad either but only used for 2 laptops.
I hear you. I can afford to wait a while longer, until all the cards are on the table in February that is...
Hrm..., birthday coming up in March.
