Asus has announced its latest Republic of Gamers laptop, the G53 with Nvidia-powered 3D display, and the specifications are certainly impressive.

The 15.6in laptop is based around an Intel Core i7-740QM processor running at 1.73GHz and featuring a combined 6MB cache. Intel's Turbo Boost technology means that, when required, it's capable of overclocking itself to 2.93GHz.

The luggable laptop also includes a whopping 8GB of DDR3 RAM and a 640GB mechanical hard drive for storage, while a Blu-ray drive will both read and write to Blu-ray discs, DVDs, and CDs.

It's the display, and the chip behind it, that will get the most interest, however: the 15.6in LED-backlit display might have a somewhat disappointing resolution of 1366x768, but it does feature a 120Hz refresh rate and integrated receiver for the bundled Nvidia 3D Vision shutter glasses. If small-screen 3D isn't what you're looking for, Asus has included an HDMI 1.4a video output for connection to a big screen.

The display is powered by an Nvidia GTX 460M GPU backed with 1.5GB of GDDR5 graphics memory, meaning that the G53 should have enough poke to run most games at the display's low native resolution even with Nvidia 3D Vision switched on.

Connectivity has been taken care of in the form of integrated 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, wired gigabit Ethernet, and Bluetooth, and Asus has also included a single USB 3.0 port in addition to three USB 2.0 ports for hooking up peripheral devices.

There's no denying that, even for a 15.6in gaming laptop, the Asus G53 is a bit of a beast: measuring 39.1cm x 29.7cm x 2-5cm and weighing a whopping 3.6Kg, it's not something you'll want to use as a day-to-day portable - and it's telling that Asus isn't offering any clues as to the battery life.

The Asus Republic of Gamers G53 will appear in retailers over the next few days, with the suggested retail price set at £1,599 - although that does also get you a 'gaming rucksack and gaming bag.'
