The PS3 will require a firmware update the second you connect it to the internet to enable PlayStation Network support, say the bods at Sony.
The initial update will take the firmware from 1.0 to 1.1. It will be a required update for PSN support, but there is no news on whether Sony will adopt the PSP strategy of including firmware updates on game discs for forced updates and control of the platform.
The PSP will get a 3.0 firmware update at the end of November to allow it to connect to PSN and the PS3. A new feature called Remote Play will allow the PSP to play content stored on the PS3, and the PSN update should add the PSOne downloadable content many PSP owners have been waiting for - Final Fantasy VII, for example.
In related news, Sony's Phil Harrison refused to confirm a March release date for the PS3 in Europe, leading to renewed speculation about whether or not the console could be delayed further.
"Given that all of our previous statements about launching in Europe simultaneously with the US and Japan turned out not to be the case, I would not like to make any definitive statements on that. It's not my job to comment on hardware supply issues other than to say some very smart people are working very hard to catch up," Harrison said.
