In the run-up to E3 2009 a bunch of pictures and videos of Sony's new handheld platfrom, dubbed the PSP Go, have been leaked online, fully detailing the successor to the original PlayStation Portable.
The PSP Go information was leaked online before E3 2009 officially started, but it seems that the new handheld console will not be available in shops until Autumn at the earliest. Sony had apparently planned to announce a new PS3 SKU at E3 too, but that would not launch until later this year either, according to
reports.
Some of the details about the PSP Go given in the leaked videos reveal that it will be around 43 percent lighter than the PSP-3000, will have 16GBs of internal flash memory and will operate purely on digital content from the PlayStation Store - the UMD drive is officially a thing of the past. According to Sony's John Koller the PSP Go will have a 3.8 inch screen and a pop-out controller pad too.
"
It's going to be something a lot of consumers like - download straight to a hard drive," Koller said in the video.
The slide-out controller pad will be different from the previous PSP model, with more emphasis going on a conventional d-pad, rather than a thumbstick. The old display, sound and volume control buttons from the original PSP are gone too.
Compared to other portable platforms early reports indicate that the screen will be about 0.3 inches larger than that of the iPhone, with the whole PSP body being about 11 percent smaller than the earlier PSP models. Fully expanded the PSP Go is significantly smaller than an opened Nintendo DS or DSi and will be the lightest of all handheld platforms at just 8.3 ounces according to
Kotaku.
Sony have since refused to comment on the leaked content, promising only that more details will be coming tomorrow - so stay tuned for that. Until then, discuss the PSP Go in
the forums.
