Ron Gilbert, the creator of the The Secret of Monkey Island series and Maniac Mansion, has officially unveiled the first proper glimpse at his new game at the Penny Arcade Expo this weekend.

Dubbed DeathSpank, the game is based around a character invented for Gilbert's Grumpy Gamer web-comic series and has been described as a fusion of classic adventure games and Diablo.

Remarkably little is known about the details of the game still and matters haven't been helped by the changes made to DeathSpank over the years. While the title was originally intended to be episodic, Gilbert has since confirmed that it'll be released as a full all-in-one game and will be published by Hothead Games, developers of the Penny Arcade games that Gilbert consulted on.

Gilbert apparently spent four years building the design for DeathSpank and trying to find a publisher for the title, eventually securing a deal with Hothead Games after his work on the Penny Arcade games and developing the game for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. The release date for the title is still listed as 'Soonerish'.

You can find out more about DeathSpank over at the sparsely-populated official website and you can check out the official trailer shown at PAX below, or some earlier teaser videos here. Let us know your thoughts in the forums.
