Ubisoft has announced that it is bringing a new team to bear on its delayed multiplayer shooter The Division, adding members of Ubisoft Annecy to Massive Entertainment, Red Storm, and Reflections.
Announced back in 2013, Tom Clancy's The Division is to be set in a near-future dystopia in which New York society is crumbling in the face of a pandemic. The player takes on the role of a member of The Division, your typical spec-ops super-soldier who teams up with other players - also spec-ops super-soldiers - to take on missions which can include attacking yet more players - more spec-ops super-soldiers, naturally - as a result. Built on the
Snowdrop Engine, the game promises impressive visuals and immersive gameplay, but isn't a small project: its original fourth-quarter 2014 launch date was
pushed back to some time in 2015 in May last year, and the company has been quiet about its schedule ever since.
Now, in a move which may have critics wondering if development is going entirely smoothly, Ubisoft has
announced that its Annecy division is joining the project, marking the fourth studio - after Massive Entertainment, Red Storm, and Reflections - to be developing the game.
'
We are very happy that Ubisoft Annecy is part of The Division’s family,' claimed David Polfeldt, Massive Entertainment's managing director, of the move. '
They are highly experienced and talented developers, adding much value to the project. Being able to work with other studios offers fantastic creative opportunities during development and, in the end, strongly benefits the overall quality of the game.'
Ubisoft Annecy is known for having worked on Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, another Tom Clancy title, along with its follow-ups Chaos Theory and Double Agent, and is responsible for the multiplayer portions of Assassin's Creed II and its sequels. Ubisoft has not yet indicated its Annecy team's plan of action, but given its history it is to be expected that the studio is working on aspects of The Division's multiplayer implementation.
