Sony is recruiting for a new games studio based in the north west, with plans to concentrate exclusively on titles for its Project Morpheus virtual reality headset.
Unveiled at GDC
back in March 2014, Project Morpheus is Sony's answer to the Windows-exclusive Oculus Rift: a head-mounted virtual reality display and tracking system designed for use with its PlayStation 4 games console. Built to integrate with its existing motion-tracking PlayStation Camera and PS Move platforms, the design includes the usual lens-based stereoscopic display and head-tracking capabilities along with three-dimensional positional audio capabilities.
Hardware is nothing without software to support it, of course, and Sony isn't ignorant of that fact.
Eurogamer has spotted a number of job adverts on Sony's official recruitment website which point to the formation of a new British studio tentatively dubbed North West Studio and to concentrate exclusively on Project Morpheus content. Sony is looking to recruit level designers, character animators, artists, game designers and more '
to join an ambitious new studio to create original games exclusively for Project Morpheus, PlayStation's VR platform,' the
adverts explain.
Anonymous sources speaking to Eurogamer have suggested that North West Studio will be set up in Manchester, and that it will involve former Evolution staff laid off after Sony restructured the studio. Sony itself has refused to comment, telling the site only that '
we are still in the early planning phase with this studio, and are currently focused on hiring the right team,' and that '
we look forward to sharing more news and formal announcements in the near future.'
