Valve has warned developers that its traditional sale mainstay of daily deals is going away, with Steam items now remaining discounted for the full duration of the sale.
Valve has traditionally driven purchasers to its Steam platform with a series of sale periods during which titles receive heavy discount. The biggest discounts have always been time-limited: promoted on the front page, these daily deals are refreshed every 24 hours - and if you miss out, you'll find yourself paying more for the titles you're after.
From now on, though, there'll be less of a rush. According to an email sent out to those who have content up for sale on Steam, verified by
Eurogamer, Valve is doing away with daily deals. Instead, items will remain at a set discount for the entire duration of the sale - meaning it'll no longer be necessary to check back daily to see what's on offer.
It's a big shift for Valve, but one which will be almost transparent to users: selected sale items will still be highlighted on the front page for one or two day periods, but once they have dropped off in favour of new content their discount will remain. Only when the sale itself is over will prices return to normal.
'
It’s not a major change, but it does make the sale a lot more valuable for customers, and it allows us to build sale features that recommend your product all sale long, instead of just during its front page feature,' Valve claimed in its email. '
For a brand new release, if you can’t get approval for your best discount for the full length of the sale, that’s OK and we can work on a plan for that game. But the vast majority of your catalogue should be running its best discount for the duration of the sale.'
