Bethesda has confirmed Prey 2 for a 2012 release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, with original Prey developer Human Head software once again at the helm.

Bethesda made the Prey 2 announcement yesterday, but with no detail provided beyond a vague '2012' release window, we opted to delay our news story until some more details had emerged.

Now, Bethesda has confirmed that Prey 2 will not use id Tech 5, id Software's latest engine which is currently being used in Rage. Instead, Prey 2 will be developed on an older id Tech engine, most probably id Tech 4 - which was used for Doom 3.

'[Prey 2] has been in development for quite a while and id Tech 5 is still in progress (until Rage ships, and probably even after). So it really wasn't an option,' Bethesda's Pete Hines told IGN.

The original press release for Prey 2 misleadingly said that the game would be 'built on the cutting edge id Tech engine from id Software.
