Nvidia has let details slip of an upcoming monthly subscription service dubbed GeForce Elite, along with the promise of a 'step-up' upgrade programme for its upcoming GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card, as part of a job listing.
Visible on the company's LinkedIn profile for the past month but only just spotted by
PC World, Nvidia's job listing for a senior marketing manager across GeForce, '
gamer loyalty', and advocacy is extremely revealing of the company's upcoming plans for gamers. The biggest news: The company is planning to offer a monthly subscription service dubbed GeForce Elite priced at $10 per month (around £8).
For that money, the advert explains, subscribers would receive four free games each quarter, culled from the company's GeForce Experience collection, exclusive in-game items, and a subscription to what the company describes as '
GeForce PC in the cloud'. The latter doesn't currently exist in the company's lineup, but its positioning seems clear: Like GeForce Now, which allows owners of the company's Android-based Shield devices to play PC games by rendering them remotely on cloud servers, the service seems likely to offer game streaming functionality to devices not able to play current titles natively.
In the same advert, Nvidia has let slip a not-terribly-well-kept secret: There's a beefed-up version of the GeForce GTX 1080 coming out, dubbed the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. What was previously unknown, however, is that Nvidia plans to allow those who already own the previous-generation GeForce GTX 980 Ti to upgrade to the GTX 1080 Ti through a '
step-up' programme. Rather than discounts, though, the company's plan appears to be to allow GTX 980 Ti owners first dibs on pre-orders, suggesting it expects stock to deplete quickly at launch.
