With the weekend now well behind us, the QuakeCon masses will have left Dallas and returned home to their day jobs and classrooms, the lucky ones clutching their freebies and prizes from Kyle Bennett's Workshop.

Unknown to many, last weekend also saw over 1,000 gamers gather at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Portland, Oregon for PDXLAN 5 - the largest LAN party on the US West Coast.

The event was extremely generously supported by a Who's Who of top industry vendors: Intel, NVIDIA, BFG, Entermax, DFI, as well as our friends at Matrix Orbital and Ultra Products. All up, an impressive US$110,000 in prizes and freebies were given away - a sign of the growing value companies place on hardcore gamers, who are often important Early Adopters and advise their friends on hardware purchases, if you speak Marketing.

Naturally, no LAN event is complete without the Modders, and PDXLAN 5 saw plenty of impressive projects. We weren't able to attend the event in person, but The Mowers Clan were their in force, and have posted a substantial gallery of the best systems.

The winners of the Custom Case competition were the Nintendo NES, the Car Muffler and the Ammo Box case, pictured below. Congratulations to those guys.

Of possibly even greater interest is the suggestion that watercooling gurus Danger Den might be introducing a range of customised wooden cases. According to TMC_Kuyaglen, they could be available to buy within a few weeks, made from a choice of woods, with pricing starting at a hefty US$800. Here are some pics:

Interestingly, there is already a 'Cases' category on the Danger Den website, though it is currently empty. We will endeavour to contact them to find out more details.
