Kingston's HyperX family of gamer-oriented products has taken a shift sideways with the announcement of a gaming headset, developed in cooperation with Swedish expert Qpad.

Dubbed the HyperX Cloud, the new headset's central feature is its ear cushions: constructed from memory-foam, the cushions work with a custom-stitched leather-padded headband to offer what Kingston claims is the ultimate in comfort for long gaming sessions. The earcups themselves, finished in leatherette as standard and with velour options available, are interchangeable, and a solid aluminium construction continues the premium feel.

The audio reproduction comes courtesy of a dynamic closed 53mm driver, offering a claimed frequency response of 15-25,000Hz and a sound pressure level (SPL) of 98dB, ±3dB. A back electret condenser microphone is bundled with the package, and its entire 150mm gooseneck design can be detached when you want to use the headset as a simple pair of headphones.

As you might expect, the HyperX brand - traditionally used by Kingston for its gamer-oriented enthusiast-grade components - is heavily featured, with the logo reproduced on the side of the earcups in red and black. A 1m braided cable is included, along with a 2m extension which can be swapped out for a bundled 10cm iPhone connector.

While headphones might be a bit of a departure from Kingston's usual memory products, the company is serious about entering the market: the company has entered into agreements to see the HyperX Cloud made the 'official headset' of the Intel Extreme Masters, Alliance Gaming, CNB e-Sports Club, SK-Gaming and Team Liquid, to best prove its gaming audio chops.

The HyperX Cloud is due to launch in the UK in the coming weeks, priced at around £70.
