According to the New York Times, the gestation of the iTunes phone will finally be over on September 7th, with the birth taking place at the Moscone Centre in San Francisco:
Apple and Motorola indeed have plans to unveil their long- awaited iTunes music phones next week during the special event to be held in San Francisco, The New York Times is confirming.
The publication cites "a telecommunications industry analyst who has been briefed on the announcement" in saying that the Sept 7th event coincides with the launch of the phones. The findings corroborate an AppleInsider report from last week, which also placed the iTunes phone launch on Sept 7th.

This certainly sounds a stronger bet than the last supposed release date mentioned on the web - as the ROKR didn't show at the
V Festival this year, as it was alledgedly supposed to (unless it hung around back stage looking sullen with some burly minders to keep people away).
What is interesting is that it doesn't seem to be
just one handset now, and that the shindig in 'Frisco will also announce some new regular iPods - with one source telling the WSJ that they will replace the iPod mini line up.
What do you think of the ROKR's tortuous passage to launch? Let us know in the news forum
