The iPad 2 will be unveiled by Apple on 2 March, according to 'multiple sources' that have spoken to The Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital blog.

Replacing the device that many thought would flop, the news is surprising given recent rumours about the device's teething troubles. Looking set to be launched 11 months after its predecessor, the The Wall Street Journal's sources predict that the device will be thinner than the original iPad.

A 1,024 x 768 resolution display, 1.2GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU and SGX543 GPU are on the cards as well. What's more, the iPad 2 is also reportedly being shipped with twice as much RAM as the original iPad, making for a total of 512MB.

While these specifications are currently unsubstantiated, they point to an evolutionary upgrade, much like the progress we saw with the iPhone 3G and 3GS. Of course, Apple has been typically tight-lipped about the launch and specifications, so none of this has been officially confirmed yet.

The rumoured launch date is just one week away, though, so we don't have long to wait to see if it's true.

Will you be queueing outside your nearest Apple store when the iPad 2 is launched, or is the news less exciting than Heinz introducing a new variety of baked beans? Let us know your thoughts in the forums.
