Memory manufacturer Corsair has set a world record for highest DDR3 memory frequency in a move that'll have overclockers drooling with lust.

The overclock, which allowed the memory to hit a frequency of 2462MHz at CAS level 9 was achieved with a single 1GB Dominator DDR3 module on an Asus P5E3 Premium motherboard, powered by the Intel X48 chipset.

Although the tweaking only brought the Wolfdale core Intel Core 2 Duo 8400 CPU that powered the test to 3.7GHz from the stock 3GHz, it's the improvement in memory performance that Corsair are taking pride in. Martin Mueller, Senior Director of Engineering at the company, said that his company is “obsessed with pushing memory technology to its limits and beyond,” and claims that being the holder of the fastest DDR3 overclock demonstrates “the overclocking and high speed memory expertise within Corsair Labs and definitely pushes the memory enthusiast community to achieve even faster, more outrageous speeds.

Which sounds like a challenge to me.

As well as giving a nod to the quality of the board – which Gigabyte won't be too happy about – the company is keen to pin the credit for the high speeds that were achieved on the Dominator RAM being designed “with the highest-performing IC over-clocking capability” in mind, alongside the quad-layer DHX heatsink system that kept the chips cool even under the pressure of the overclock.

For the sceptics among you, Corsair has kindly provided a set of validated CPU-Z results which clearly state a memory speed of 1231.4MHz. Double that thanks to the number-fudging wonder of double data rate RAM and you get the quite frankly impressive score of 2462MHz at a front-side bus speed of 615MHz.

Anyone here lucky enough to have a motherboard equipped with DDR3 RAM – and crazy enough to push it to the absolute limits in order to best Corsair's score? If you do, be sure to let us know over in the forums
