As I've been known to scream at anybody who will listen, Geometry Wars is one of the best games on the planet.
It's such a simple premise. You, a little ship, some lasers, dual analogue control and a hypnotising combination of psychadelic visuals and entrancing, thumping soundtrack.
It's 2D-shooter perfection.
It was one of the launch titles for Xbox Live Arcade, appearing at the end of 2005 along with the console's launch. But now, you lucky, lucky people, it's available for Windows download through Microsoft - for
four quid.
Four quid! Why are you still reading this?
Bizarre Creations is the studio behind the original Xbox 360 version, and the guys there have a note up
here about the PC conversion. You can play with keyboard only, keyboard and mouse or joypad (for the ultimate experience, plug in an Xbox 360 joypad).
It's available from
Microsoft MSN Games, and it's exclusive to Windows Vista, for no reason beyond that of marketing. For those of you who check these things, it requires a Windows Experience Index of 3.0, with 4.0 recommended. Anybody reading this can run it, we suspect.
At least go and get the free trial version, then let us know what you make of it
over in the forums.
