A spy photo seems to suggest that Microsoft is preparing an Xbox 360 with a built-in HDMI output port.

The photo, published over at Xbox-scene, shows the HDMI port sat underneath the AV out and next to the nextwork port on the system motherboard. The current 360 has nothing there.

HDMI out will be required for digital output of protected movie content. The Xbox 360 will have a USB add-on drive that allows playback of HD-DVD content.

No word on how Microsoft is going to play this one. Is the HDMI-equipped version going to be the new Premium version, or will it form a third package? What about the people that have already paid for 360s - will they be left without a digital out? It's certainly an interesting conundrum.
