Transformers is the next property to get the Angry Birds treatment in the form of an upcoming game and merchandising.
Following in the footsteps of the Angry Birds Star Wars games, the bird-flinging series is partnering up with the Hasbro-owned transforming robot franchise. Details of the game have not been outlined other than that it will be about a battle between ‘Autobirds and Deceptihogs’.
Angry Birds Transformers will be available across a range of platforms and will feature a conglomeration between Angry Birds and Transformers characters in much the same way that the Star Wars titles managed.
’This mash-up is going to appeal to both those who grew up with the brand in the 80s, as well as fans of the brand today,’ said Rovio chief marketing officer Blanca Juti.
The game will also be compatible with a range of Skylanders-esque Telepods toys from Hasbro which can be scanned by smartphones to unlock characters in the game.
Telepods have previously been sold alongside Angry Birds Star Wars 2 and proved popular with more than 30 million scanned in by players. On the back of this, Hasbro has also released a range of the toys for kart racing title Angry Birds Go.
Hints at the collaboration between the two brands were first uncovered back in January when Angry Birds Transformers product names were mentioned online. These suggest that the game will be an extension or follow up to Angry Birds Go.
The most recent release for the Angry Birds series has been Angry Birds Epic, an RPG style entry for the franchise, which launched earlier this month. Angry Birds Transformers is expected to launch later on in 2014.
