Online game delivery would seem to be the way of the future and with Steam recently announcing over 13 million users, it's no surprise that other companies are wanting to get in on the action.
A partnership between GDI and Virgin has produced one exciting new game delivery system called
A World Of My Own, or the unfortunately abbreviated
AWOMO. Just entering the Beta stages of development, there are 30,000 places up for grabs for the new system.
AWOMO is quite different from other online distribution systems. First, not only does it come with an embedded 3D world in the form of an island paradise, which users use as a hub for their online activities, but it is also subscription based so that gamers can get the most out of the games they download.
AWOMO is also boasting rapid download speeds coupled with some new delivery technologies so that games can be downloaded in minutes rather than hours.
“This is a really exciting development for us, as it gives us the opportunity to do for PC Games what iTunes has done for music. The GDI technology will revolutionise how the mass market will play games, and will give them more choice for less money.” Said Sir Richard Branson, Chairman of Virgin.
Digital delivery is a bit of a crowded scene though so whether this new system can go the distance or not still remains to be seen. It all sounds promising at the moment though, so why not
sign up for one of the beta passes and try it for yourself? Beta testers will get over fifty games to play for free as part of the the deal and there are plenty of offers and competitions already going on in the system.
This could be the system to topple GameTap, though whether we'll see developers creating
content especially for
AWOMO remains to be seen.
Is digital delivery the way forwards or do you prefer to have a
boxed copy? Are public beta tests worth the bother, or just a cheap way for developers to save on their own testers? Tell us what you think, in
the forums.
