Batman: Arkham Origins, a prequel to the Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City games, is in development and aiming for a release later this year.
The game is being made by Warner Brothers Montreal who have taken over the Arkham series from Rocksteady Studios.
Revealed by Game Informer, The game will be set in the streets of Gotham City and the plot will involve eight assassins visiting the city with the mission to kill Batman.
Which Batman villains are being included in Arkham Origins is not yet clear, although assassin Deathstroke will be making a debut appearance in the series.
Development on the title is being headed up by Eric Holmes whose previous work includes open world sandbox titles Prototype and The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.
A tie-in side-scrolling platformer is also being produced for the 3DS and Vita called Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate and is being developed by Metroid Prime studio Armature Studios.
Batman: Arkham Asylum was first launched in 2009 and has won the approval of numerous critics thanks to its blend of stealth and brawling gameplay. According to developers Rocksteady, the combat system went through a revision that was best described as a 'rhythm action game', of which some elements remained in the final version.
The Arkham series also won over Batman fans by bringing on Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill to voice Batman and The Joker respectively, reprising their roles from Batman: The Animated Series.
Batman: Arkham Origins is expected to launch on October 25 for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii U and PC.
