Double Fine's Space-based management sim Spacebase DF-9 has launched on Steam Early Access.
Spacebase DF-9 tasks players with building a space station and helping it grow by collecting resources, fighting off enemy invaders and staying on top of any equipment malfunctions that the space station suffers from.
Double Fine is soliciting player feedback through the Steam community and through its own website. Funds raised through the Early Access release will further contribute to the game's development.
The game was originally a product of Double Fine's internal game jam, Amnesia Fortnight, which had its most recent iteration shared with the world through a pay-what-you-want Humble Bundle.
'I've been really excited about Spacebase DF-9 ever since it was one of the highest-voted games in our public Amnesia Fortnight game jam last year,' said Double Fine president and chief executive Tim Schafer. 'So excited, in fact, that I decided to launch the team into space until they get it finished, free of the tempting pleasures and distractions of the planet Earth.'
Since the initial prototype, Spacebase DF-9 has been rebuilt from the ground up and now features an isometric view as opposed to the top-down pure 2D view that it previously had. The game has gone through several visual improvements including the implementation of a lighting system.
To get to the stage it is at now, the game has been supported by Indie Fund along with several other independent game studios and groups including Humble Bundle, AppAbove Games, The Behemoth and Hemisphere Games.
Spacebase DF-9 is currently available on Steam Early Access for £18.99 or direct from its own website for a range of different prices. It is compatible with Windows, Linux and Mac systems.
