Fallout 3 is one of the games we're keeping a very close eye on, which is hardly surprising given that some of us are still replaying Fallout 2 regularly, and we too have been worrying about how the new game may hold up to the classics.

A sequel to the original, turn-based and isometric RPG series from Interplay, Fallout 3 has been picked up by the makers of The Elder Scrolls series, Bethesda, after Interplay suffered financial difficulties. Despite being very vocal fans of the series and excellent RPG makers in their own right, many are worried that Bethesda will not be able to create the sequel Fallout 2 deserves and many are worried that the game will end up as nothing more than 'Oblivion with guns'.

Well, if the new screenshots are anything to go by then it looks like the game may end up being just as gory as previous titles.

While little is known about the story that the game will follow, we do know that it will be possible to play in both turn-based and real-time combat and that the entire game will be spent in first-person as the player character leaves his own underground vault to brave the nuclear wasteland in search of his father, who will be voiced by Liam Neeson.

Fans are also glad that Ron Perlman, voice of Hellboy, has signed on to continue narrating the game and has already leant his gravelly voice to the game's trailer.

Bethesda has previously promised that Fallout 3, which is set thirty years after Fallout 2 and in the ruins of Washington D.C., will be just as violent and gory as the previous games, but until recent screenshots hit the net nobody knew just how truthful it was being.

So, check out the new combat screenshots below, though be aware that they are deliberately gory and not for the faint-hearted, and check out just how bloody Fallout 3 is going to be. The final product is set to hit PC and Xbox 360 in Fall of 2008.

Still dubious of how the game will end up, or are you finally won over to Bethesda's way of thinking? Comments in the usual place!
