We don't normally cover handheld gaming on bit-tech (although drop us a line if you think we should), but this story was just too good to pass up.

Many of our readers will be old-school gamers, and the vast majority will probably have played an old version of Final Fantasy at some point. Whether it's one of the original NES or SNES versions, or even if you got into the series at the enormously popular VII, the series has a special place in many gamer's hearts.

Well, FF3 is now coming out for the Nintendo DS. Originally released only in Japan, for the NES, there are some fantastic screencaps just out of the difference. Above right you can see a couple of areas from the NES version, then the same areas rendered in the new DS engine.

The visual style is very similar to Crystal Chronicles on the GameCube. Frankly, this could be the reason to go grab a DS. The details, and some more screenshots, are over at GamersDaily.
