A report on 1UP has revealed that a sequel to Final Fantasy XI is currently in development for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC platforms simultaneously.

Square Enix, the makers of the ever popular Final Fantasy series are to make a sequel for Final Fantasy XI, which is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG).

However Square Enix has released a statement denying a sequel saying the MMORPG in development is a completely new title, although even if a sequel is released, it's likely to be in March 2007 at the earliest. If you are a Final Fantasy fan, don't lose all hope since Square Enix also mentioned this:

"In addition, the Company continuously plans to release expansion packs for Final Fantasy XI, available on PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and Windows, as well as perform version updates."

So either Square is covering up for now, or it plans to release an expansion sometime in the future. Only time will tell.
