Microsoft has promised to give its full support to struggling developer Rare.
Earlier this year, UK studio Rare was hit by a round of layoffs and things took a turn for the worse when Microsoft announced it was going to sell the Xbox One without a Kinect sensor, a problem for the studio because it has recently shifted its entire focus to the Kinect Sports series.
Talking to
Eurogamer, Microsoft corporate vice-president Phil Harrison stated that the studio still had the full support of Microsoft Studios which acquired Rare in 2002.
’We are very fortunate in having Rare and Lionhead in the UK as crown jewels of Microsoft Studios,’ said Harrison.
’Rare is an incredible talent and they have some very very ambitious plans for the future and we’re supporting them in every way we can.’
He also confirmed that Rare is working on a couple of new projects that Microsoft will announce
’at the right time’.
Approximately 16 people left the studio back in May following the release of Kinect Sports Rivals which reportedly made a significant loss for the studio.
Microsoft stopped including the motion controlled and voice activated Kinect peripheral with all Xbox One bundles last month, bringing the price tag of the console down by approximately £50. This move was most likely taken to provide further competition with the Playstation 4 which has since launch been the cheaper console.
