Resisting the temptation to
mount them on the heads of sharks, Microsoft has unveiled its new gaming mouse this morning.
The mouse is designed with a laser sensor rather than an optical sensor, putting it in the same class as the sublime Logitech MX1000.
Rather than utilise the common Intellimouse Explorer shape, the Laser Mouse 6000 is an ambidextrous design, which will please lefties everywhere.
It utilises the sideways scrolling wheel. However, there's one important change from the sideways scrollers on the previous generation mice - this one has a vertical 'click' on the scroll wheel, rather than a constant roll. This makes it far easier to use the wheel to switch weapons in CS or Doom.
Microsoft claim this mouse has been designed purely with gamers in mind. It features software that, on the press of a button, can dynamically raise and lower the tracking rate to preset levels. This means you can use fast movement for generally fragging, then hit a button and having the tracking rate slow right down for precise sniping.
The 6000 has a new-style cord, which is far thinner and more flexible than previous iterations. This is designed to give the feeling of a wireless mouse with the performance of a wired one.
It's going to cost $55 in the States, with pricing in the UK not yet announced. In a joint press release, Microsoft also formally announced the Xbox 360 controller for Windows, confirming that the controllers will be cross platform. The 360 controller will cost $45, but it's not known whether the Windows version is wired or wireless, since the 360 has both.
There's a product page for the LM6000 over on Microsoft
here, and we'll be bringing you a review just as soon as we can get our hands on one. You can discuss this news in our forum thread
here.
Who knows - maybe the new mouse will make Microsoft another...
