Atari arcade classic Asteroids, featuring a plucky space-triangle fighting off asteroids that decrease in size and increase in speed as they are shot, is being rebooted into an open-world survival MMO.
In news that sounds like it comes from the video gaming Onion, Asteroids: Outpost will be a PC-exclusive putting players in the space-boots of a miner in an open-world sandbox trying to build up their defences and gather wealth, or go from 'rocks to riches' as Atari puts it.
Players will be dumped on a large asteroid and tasked with exploring, collecting resources, crafting equipment and building customised bases whilst fighting off or teaming up with other players.
'We're paying homage to the original Asteroids by incorporating classic features such as asteroid blasting capabilities, while introducing a completely new premise and gameplay, said Atari chief executive Fred Chesnais. 'Asteroids: Outpost will appeal to both fans of the classic Asteroids as well as enthusiasts of immersive survival games and expansive MMOs.'
Sounding like a cross between Minecraft and DayZ in space, Asteroids: Outpost is being developed by Salty Games, a new studio that includes former Call of Duty and Star Trek Online developers. The WarZ publisher Arktos Entertainment Group, will also be lending technical support.
The original Asteroids first appeared in arcades in 1979 and has become one of the most recognisable classic video games.
