The modding team behind the long-awaited and much-anticipated
Black Mesa Source mod for
Half-Life 2 have given the next tentative release date for the mod today.
The team behind the mod, which is a full remake of the original
Half-Life 1 in the
Half-Life 2 Source engine, is now expected to be released towards the end of this year. Not massively specific admittedly, but it's better than nothing.
The mod itself looks phenomenal too, as can be seen in
a trailer for the project that was released earlier. The mod promises to be a far better looking version of
Half-Life 1 than Valve's own attempt to recreate the classic FPS in the Source Engine too, as
Half-Life: Source used all the same old textures and models from the original game.
The
Black Mesa Source mod on the other hand will use wholly new graphics which are faithfully recreated versions based on the original
Half-Life game.
"
I won't say anything more specific than "Late 2009"," said project leader Carlos Montero in an interview with
ScreenPlay. "
Like any developer, we want to squeeze as much awesome in as possible before we ship, but we won't withhold it any longer than absolutely necessary once it's done."
The
Black Mesa Source project has had a troubled history, suffering all sorts of delays, attacks and supposed legal problems, but it looks like the end may finally be near. Are you excited? Let us know in
the forums.
