Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth, the first in the franchise to leave the confines of our home planet, has an official launch date: the 24th of October 2014.
Announced
back in April, the game is a spiritual successor to Meier's space-based Alpha Centauri. Released in 1999, the game allowed players to colonise the planet Chiron in orbit around the eponymous star. The plot was largely a follow-on from a space victory in Meier's Civilization games, but Alpha Centauri was not an official part of that franchise which remained studiously Earth-based. Civilization: Beyond Earth, then, is to be the first space-based title to form an official part of the franchise - and one which its creators and publishers undoubtedly hope will do considerably better than its critically-acclaimed but poor-selling predecessor.
The title is to launch world-wide on the 24th of October, and will come with an Exoplanets Map Pack for pre-order customers. This pack, its publisher 2K Games has explained, is based on real-life research into potentially habitable planets outside our own solar system and allows players the chance to colonise Kepler 186f, Rigel Khantoris Bb, Tau Ceti d, Mu Arae f, 82 Eridani e, and Eta Vulpeculae b, each of which will have unique features that will require different tactics.
The company has also released a video offering an inside look at the title narrated by lead designers Will Miller and David McDonough, including gameplay footage and details on the personalities that the player will encounter during the course of the game, reproduced below.
