Lucasarts has announced that it will be bringing its entire back catalogue of games to Steam, as well as other digital distribution networks, over the next few months - with releases starting tomorrow.
What's more, the list of re-releases will include a selection of previously unreleased and hard-to-find versions of some games and every game to get a re-release has been tweaked to run perfectly on Windows XP and Vista.
The full list of games getting the Steam treatment hasn't been fully unveiled, but the initial line-up will include the following ten games and will be available tomorrow -
Armed and Dangerous, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure, LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure, LOOM, Star Wars Battlefront II, Star Wars Republic Commando, Star Wars Starfighter, The Dig, Thrillville: Off the Rails.
On July 15th the initial batch of re-releases will be bolstered by the launch of
The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, which will also be available on Steam and will be a graphical and audio overhaul of the original adventure classic.
What's most interesting of all though is that some of the games on list (and Lucasarts has claimed that this is "
just the beginning") will be previously unreleased versions of the original. The Steam version of musical fantasy
LOOM will be based on the talkie edition of the game, not the initial text-only release. Steam's copy of
The Last Crusade will also be an updated version, with tonnes of bug fixes and a specially emulated sound engine.
"
This effort is going to make it possible to introduce a whole new generation of gamers to LucasArts' classic games," said Darrell Rodriguez, president of LucasArts. "
It also gives more people a chance to play our games by making them available long after they've disappeared from store shelves. We hope our fans are as excited as we are about our plans and we can't wait to share what's coming next. This is just the beginning."
Personally, we're glad to see that the initial line-up isn't just a quick cash-in on the better known
Day of the Tentacle and
Sam and Max games and actually includes the massively under-appreciated
LOOM and
The Dig. What are your thoughts? Let us know in
