Classic adventure franchise Myst is to return in a slightly unusual manner: a TV series with tie-in game title.

Released in 1993, graphic adventure title Myst was the game that propelled Brøderbund into the big league. Developed by Cyan Worlds, then simply Cyan, a company founded by brothers Robyn and Rand Miller, the game launched on Apple's Mac OS and featured graphics far more impressive than had ever before been seen - thanks largely to the use of pre-rendered backdrops. While the confusing and slow nature of the game itself put some off, the game was a major seller: ported to Windows, Sega Saturn, Sony PlayStation, the 3DO and even Microsoft's Pocket PC, the game held the record of the world's best-selling PC game for years until it was dethroned by EA's The Sims in 2002.

Its sequels, including a massively multiplayer online project, didn't fare so well, and recent re-releases on Nintendo's 3DS and iOS have been poorly received. Cyan Worlds still feels there's life in the old dog yet, however, and has reportedly teamed up with production company Legendary TV & Digital Media to develop a TV series and tie-in game set in the world of Myst.

'Cyan’s goal in working with Legendary is not just to create a compelling TV drama but to develop a true transmedia product that will include a companion video game that extends the story across both media,' Cyan Worlds claimed in a statement published by Deadline. 'Seventy per cent of tablet owners use their device while watching TV at least several times a week. Cyan sees the potential to push the boundaries of interactive storytelling to a new level.'

Full details of the project have yet to be released, but there's plenty of lore for the companies to plunder: as well as Myst and its four direct sequels, the franchise led to numerous spin-off titles and tie-in novels.
