Sony Online Entertainment has confirmed that upcoming MMO-sequel Planetside 2 will feature a 'free component' and in-game cash shop.
Whether Planetside 2 will be a totally free-to-play game financed solely by in-game microtransactions has yet to be confirmed, however and Sony hasn't yet clarified what business model Planetside 2 will follow.
Speaking to
Planetside Universe (via
RPS), Sony's John Smedley did explain that the in-game shop would only sell player customisation items however, not in game weapons.
'
There will be a cash shop for the game however the goal is not to sell power,' said Smedley. '
For example we would sell things like customization because we would like there to be a massive amount of ways to customize your characters. So people could recognize you or your outfit out of a group. We will not sell a more powerful gun or vehicle.'
First rumoured back in 2009, Planetside 2 was only officially announced earlier this year and currently has no firm release date.
