THQ Nordic has confirmed that it isn't going to let the Darksiders franchise die, promising to launch a new entry on consoles and Windows PCs some time next year.
The future of the popular Darksiders series of games looked bleak when
THQ announced Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2012 and was
formally split up and
sold off to multiple buyers a year later, until Nordic Games
announced it was rebranding to THQ Nordic. At the time the newly renamed company promised it would be concentrating on continuing the franchise along with other former THQ titles including Destroy All Humans!, Frontlines: Fuel of War, Titan Quest, and Red Faction.
Now, the company is making good on its promises with the announcement that Darksiders III, the first game in the franchise since the demise of the original THQ, will launch in 2018. '
As promised, we have taken our time to ensure that this next Darksiders will be everything action-adventure gamers and especially Darksiders loyalists could dream of and more,' claimed co-founder and group chief executive Lars Wingefors, while revealing that Gunfire Games - comprised primarily of developers who worked on the original Darksiders - will be working on the project under its leadership.
'
The Gunfire team brings an intimate involvement with every aspect of the Darksiders franchise since its inception,' claimed THQ Nordic's Reinhard Pollice. '
There is simply no team better qualified to create Darksiders III, beginning with our unpredictable and enigmatic hero Fury, a mage who is considered the most powerful of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse!'
The plot, the company has revealed, centres on the aforementioned Fury in a quest to hunt down the Seven Deadly Sins at the request of the Charred Council. '
As a mage, Fury relies on her whip and magic to restore the balance between good and evil,' the company's precis explains. '
The expansive Darksiders III game world is presented as an open-ended, living, free-form planet Earth that is dilapidated by war and decay, and overrun by nature. Fury will move back and forth between environments to uncover secrets while advancing the Darksiders III story.'
The game is scheduled to launch some time in 2018 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PCs, with more information available on the
official website.
