Valve is to release an updated version of the old
Unreal Tournament mod,
Alien Swarm, for free later today - along with the full source code.
Alien Swarm has been remade in Valve's Source engine and will include full Steam support, with cloud storage, Steamworks tools and community support. The game itself is a top-down, co-op focused shooter about blowing up aliens - check the trailer below for more info.
The release of
Alien Swarm has come about after Valve hired the team behind the original
UT mod, Black Cat. Since their acquisition in 2008 Black Cat has worked on
Left 4 Dead 2 and
Portal, but has continued working on
Alien Swarm too.
"
If you’ve ever thought about developing a mod on the Source engine with Steamworks, this release provides more insight and examples for using Steamworks in game production," said a Valve spokesperson in the official announcement.
The game is set to be made available at around 9PM GMT tonight, but you can check the trailer below for a quick taster of what's to come in the meantime.
