Zynga is set to publish a social game based on the Game of Thrones series through a partnership with HBO and Disruptor Beam.
Game of Thrones Ascent has been designed by developer Disruptor Beam and the social game has already had 500,000 installs since its open beta started in February.
Zynga will publish the game on Facebook and its own Zynga.com platform. The social gaming giant will also help the Disruptor Beam team develop further content that is in keeping with the established fantasy world.
'One thing that I’ve learned in my years of starting and building companies is that gaming companies cannot always be solely responsible for 100 percent of their hits,' said Disruptor Beam chief executive Jon Radoff. 'Partnerships are integral to the success of any game company and any game.'
Disruptor Beam has worked closely with HBO to ensure that its game stays true to the TV show's vision of George R. R. Martin's world of Westeros, and weekly content will be released for the game to match new episodes from the currently airing third series. It also features music from the show.
Players will have to swear allegiance to one of the great houses and then work on developing their lands and reputation through quests and alliances.
According to Zynga head of partner publishing Rob Dyer, the Game of Thrones title was highly sought after in the publishing world.
'Disruptor Beam has done an outstanding job with the game’s design – creating an engaging and authentic experience that appeals to midcore and casual players alike,' added Dyer.
Game of Thrones has made the transition to the video game world before in a title developed by Cyanide released in June 2012. The title was considered rushed and tedious and did not receive a good critical reception.
The Game of Thrones series has however had a more successful time in the tabletop gaming scene with a very successful and well known board game, a collectible card game and a pen-and-paper RPG.
